Interview: Kevin Cheng on How to Communicate Ideas with Comics

We recently spoke with Kevin Cheng to bring you more information about his upcoming pre-conference workshop at the IA Summit, See What I Mean: How to Communicate Ideas with Comics.

Q: Why should someone sign up for your session?

If you need a quick way to convey an idea, if you've ever felt like your team wasn't on the same page, if you feel like your product is hard to explain on your homepage, or if you've ever felt like the requirements document you made doesn't get read, then you might want to try using comics to communicate.

Q: Why is it important that participants attend your session now?

In the age of 140 characters, multiple tabs, and multitasking, getting someone's attention in an accurate and concise fashion is increasingly difficult. The resurgence of infographics, visual thinking, and storytelling all point to the need for better ways to get your point across. In any case, while you'll incrementally improve your skill set with most workshops, my guess is that this workshop will be the biggest departure from your standard toolkit—which means you'll have the most to learn.

Q: How will your session help attendees immediately on their return to work?

Comics grab people's attention—whether it's your manager, your peers, or your potential customers. Whether you have any illustration training or not, I'll teach you to draw comics within minutes.

Q: What are the top three things attendees will learn in your session?

  • How to get over your fear of drawing and sketching.
  • How to express your ideas in a concise and attractive medium.
  • How to sell the method within your organization.

Q: Can you give us a glimpse of any surprises you've got planned for attendees?

Don't tell anyone, but attendees might have to draw a smiley face.

Q: What are you willing to do/offer if you sell out your workshop seats?

I highly doubt that'll happen unfortunately, because too many people feel that drawing is pre-requisite for this workshop or feel that this form of communication isn't directly applicable to their work. If the workshop sells out, every attendee will get a copy of the Rosenfeld Media published book on this subject for free when it's published!

You've heard it here, folks! Don't miss this great opportunity to learn what you need to know about communicating ideas with comics. Get more details about this pre-conference workshop.
